The Environment Agency (EA) plays an important role in managing water resources, including the abstraction of water. Water abstraction is licensed, with abstractors needing to comply with conditions to reduce or stop abstraction. This is increasingly important as climate change affects our water availability and we need to monitor and manage water resources to ensure supply to individuals, companies and protect wildlife.

Please join us to hear more about how the Environment Agency is using a new digital service and their hydrometric network to manage England’s water resources. The Environment Agency regulates water abstraction in England through a system of licences. Around 3,000 of the 20,000 licences must stop or reduce how much water they take when it’s dry to protect the rights of other water users and the environment.

This talk will:

• Provide an overview of water resource management.
• Introduce the EA’s hydrometric network and how it is used to manage water resources.
• Introduce the EA’s Managing Water Abstraction Service, the role it plays informing abstraction licence holders when the restrictions are in force, and future improvements.
• Provide links about careers in the Environment Agency.
