Although the parish church, now a cathedral, has medieval origins, most of Bradford's growth occurred in the 19th and 20th centuries. So most of the buildings derive from those periods, when Catholicism and nonconformism were the growing denominations.
The last 75 years have seen the descendants of the earlier populations move to suburbs, and reduce their religious commitment. Older churches and chapels lost their congregations, and the buildings have been adapted for new uses. Sometimes these uses reflect the religions of replacement populations, but secular uses also occur.
