The last year has seen a huge disruption in some of the oldest institutions of global governance, notably the United Nations. The UN, with its longstanding strengths and weaknesses, is coming under new pressures from a hostile Trump administration, a substantial decline in western foreign aid, and enduring demands for a more fair representation of the majority world - all in the context of ever more serious global problems. This lecture will explore these recent trends and ask what futures might lie ahead.

About the speaker

Professor Emma Mawdsley is Head of the Geography Department at the University of Cambridge. She teaches on Global Development Futures, and on the Geographies of Hope. Her research includes work on environmental and regional politics in India, middle class environmentalisms in the majority world, South-South development cooperation, and the changing geographies of foreign aid
