About the speaker

Rosa Vásquez Espinoza, Ph.D. is a Peruvian scientist and conservationist. She is author of The Spirit of the Rainforest, National Geographic Explorer, Explorer’s Club Member, EC50 and New Explorer 2025 Awardee, Founder and Executive Director Amazon Research Internacional, 100 Women BBC 2024, 50 Women Forbes Peru 2025.

    In 2022 Spirit of Gaia, a Wharram 63ft sailing double canoe with Hanneke Wharram Boone as captain, started a voyage to Portugal. This talk recounts some exciting sailing as well as moments of danger when Gaia was caught in a storm at anchor and surrounded by breaking surf.
