Include simple directions (NSEW) and locational and directional language (near, far, left and right) to describe features and routes on a map. Use aerial photographs and plan perspectives etc Sp1 The UK the 4 countries and capitals (and Atlantic Ocean, English Channel, North Sea). Location of Enfield in London. Also in Sp1 - Begin weather observations (links with art observational drawings of Spring plants) SP2 Australia- Location (southern hemisphere), size, population etc. Include major geological feature Ayers Rock (Uluru)- include geology, landscape, climate of locality (not just Aboriginal myths/legends/symbols). Also in unit include study of a city (Canberra or Sydney perhaps) to ensure pupils have contemporary, balanced understanding of country. Weather and seasons- how do we compare (measure and record weather outside our classroom door with Australia). The Great Barrier Reef. Year 2 A2 Holidays- 7 continents, 5 oceans and re-cap of UK seas. Drawing and reading of simple maps. S1 Fieldwork- Boxers Lake and Highlands Village; human and physical features. SP2 Hong Kong Links to the curriculum requirement to understand geographical similarities and differences. This links with Literacy Isle of Struay work (based on the Isle of Coll) and fits with requirement to study Non-European locality. If necessary, start by looking at Coll (depending on content of Literacy lessons). Then move onto Hong Kong bustling, modern islands. Look at human and physical characteristics- location, population, housing, trade, wealth, commerce, harbours, ports, coastal features. Year 3 A1/S1 Fieldwork - Winchmore Hill and Edmonton Green Where are they located in context of UK, London and Enfield? Physical and human geog of both. S2 Galapagos islands physical and human geography. Formation of volcanic islands, biomes, land use, population. Also- Spain within Europe either The Geography of Spain within MFL or as a mini-unit in geography. Year 4 A or Sp Study of the Amazon- Lesson themes: Biomes of South America; location as region and river system; resources of Amazonia and its people (ensure that people includes those living in urban environments i.e. Manaus with a population of 2 million in heart of Brazilian Amazon) not just traditional communities; changes over time; Brasilia. Mini unit- Geography of UK. Looking at physical and human geography over two or three lessons. Year 5 A1 or A2 Investigating Climate. A study distribution of the worlds major climate zones. The importance of the equator and the tropics. Focus on temperate climate (UK climate type), including a visit to Affinity Water treatment centre. Also look at hot and cold deserts in depth- include case studies. Antarctica is a polar desert- focus on geography of Antarctica and Scott/Shackleton. Also include a case study of a hot desert (in N. America i.e. Mojave desert in which Las Vegas lies/as well as Sahara). A2 or Sp2 Rivers and S1 Coasts. Includes fieldwork to local river (Houndsden Gutter?) and the Thames. Summer trip to Walton-on-the-Naze. The timing of these units needs to be discussed because the related fieldwork is weather/season dependent. In addition to the physical geography of the river course/drainage basin, UK rivers will also be located and studied. Mini-unit: The Geography of Europe including Russia (locational knowledge knowing where these places are- not everything about them). Year 6 Mountains, Volcanoes and Earthquakes. This unit has been completely written (by Anna Brace), in line with the new curriculum. This unit comprises 6-8 lessons. While the first 1-2 lessons feature Mount Everest, the other lessons focus on the UK, Europe, N and S America. (One lesson for example is predominantly skills-based and uses an OS map of Snowdon to look at map skills and map interpretation). The Geography of North America- especially Texas- focusing on the distribution of natural resources including energy- i.e. oil/petrol. Also look at the recycling of natural resources i.e. fieldwork in Edmonton re-cycling centre. Mini unit- to include time zones, Greenwich meridian and the significance of hemispheres.
