You could make notes that compare the causes of food insecurity (physical & human), the effects and the different management solutions. If your examination asks you to have an understanding of global food insecurity, it might be a good idea to do these notes on a world map to get a sense of the distribution and global picture. There are many areas of food insecurity, but researching the following areas and the key ideas listed next to each would be a good start: (i) Sahel and/or the Eastern Horn of Africa conflict, issues of governance, food aid, land grabbing. (ii) Southern Africa traditionally the bread basket of Africa, landform, cash crops, some issues of internal governance (e.g. Zimbabwe). (iii) South America & Caribbean cash crops, economic growth vs environmental protection, GM crops, hazards (e.g. Haiti multiple hazards). - (iv) Bangladesh hazards, climate change. You could also annotate on a world map areas of contrast i.e. obesity namely parts of Europe, the USA and increasingly China. b) Investigating global power structures which affect food security issues: who are the key players? POWER which organisations and groups are involved in ensuring food security? The ideas on the Gobi clearly show the importance in the role of the government, especially in China. However, there are many others often globally operating organisations that play an incredibly important role in improving food security. You should complete some research into the following websites. You might want to focus your notes on: i) What is this players role in improving (or otherwise) food security? ii) What is this players aims/goals (why are they helping?) complete some research into the background of the organisation. iii) To what extent do they contribute to improving food security? (difficult to tell from web research but try and infer the likely contribution they seem to have). Here are some weblinks to get you started: FAO (Food and Agricultural Organisation of the United Nations) The FAO have done an incredible amount of work to support countries improve their food security. They act as a neutral meeting point to help countries negotiate food & trade agreements. They support countries improve and modernise agriculture systems to improve food & nutrition security. There are lots of up-to date statistics on the following website: HYPERLINK "http://www.fao.org/countryprofiles/index/en/?iso3=MNG&subject=3" http://www.fao.org/countryprofiles/index/en/?iso3=MNG&subject=3 World Bank is an international financial institution that provides loans to developing countries for large infrastructure programmes. It is a Bretton Woods organisation (find out what this means!). Complete some research on the link below for current World Bank funded projects. Projects are not necessarily food security related, but are aimed to improve wider development & infrastructure of a country. At the time of writing the example of the website was solar lighting for Mongolian herders. HYPERLINK "http://www.worldbank.org/en/country/mongolia" http://www.worldbank.org/en/country/mongolia NGOs e.g. World Vision NGOs typically rely on public fund raising e.g. schemes such sponsor a child. Their food security solutions tend to focus on both wider development improvements such as education and health and often more bottom-up and low tech solutions. Click on the publications section on the weblink below to see the latest projects World Vision are working on Mongolia. HYPERLINK "http://mongolia.wvasiapacific.org/" http://mongolia.wvasiapacific.org/ c) Wider reading on global food security Look out for articles in the news that link to food insecurity; climate change, population growth, globalisation of food production, hazard events and conflict are all interlinked. Try and reflect on how the story of the Gobi Desert and growing food insecurity fits into this. The following link is a good article and references Troy: HYPERLINK "http://www.nytimes.com/2013/03/03/opinion/sunday/friedman-the-scary-hidden-stressor.html?_r=1&" http://www.nytimes.com/2013/03/03/opinion/sunday/friedman-the-scary-hidden-stressor.html?_r=1& Also see this interview with Sir Gordon Conway, the former Chief Scientist for the Department for International Development, who discusses prospects for sustainable agriculture HYPERLINK "http://www.geographyinthenews.rgs.org/interviews/article/default.aspx?id=682" http://www.geographyinthenews.rgs.org/interviews/article/default.aspx?id=682 #8tu | # w x = B 5 R :;żzrnrhQ*jhQ*Uh~s/hm5CJaJh~s/h~s/5CJaJh~s/CJaJh~s/hmCJaJh~s/h~s/CJaJh~s/hm5CJaJh~s/5CJaJh(5CJaJh~s/5CJ$aJ$/jh h 5CJ$UaJ$mHnHtH uhA?Picture 1"b3?`W'[DC4?D!n?`W'[DC4PNG IHDRj sRGBgAMA a pHYs&?>Iٴճu;V;~F@F|~{ϗ|3?a?y~75[Wկ/K_7r!οGO 6{^y{S^7M_r^ONK x7Y'h?OU<<(7˕|r+]\W,e˥.ur\\W-ˁX>UM Pw.r\эnT^Tiix+&G>z׻$'9ѧ8)ʩ;崧=/'Ք=ܝV4%/۲<]Go|GiKh̑\7mTnu[EWvir]j˛&U{;Cu[z/~C=|߮fE?./o \G?*կO׿/T?^l,]g|3L~p׾Ve׿^^UD,g'9y[cX9a2~6wcyc[wWp ?U?𢡄tA}wZ}s˽}r;ݩnw+~~~=/xAЅ.TyJL EuSvg'?)˻{50Ӻ}/~rӟE緾~`Zf=1:wo8Gm.pZz׻^5coE%.Qye]Phs-<+|rӜl<9O=Y7jL=أ ~em M̢ih<~wx?OVox5Q*tsBV{i8^G_#4iO*nk_UsS䔧yVlVyTܳ/E/ZM%&Sʿm\fΞ{Y7\u r?Pռv7!M+&ǦvuxI򔧔>?}>IO % > GL&Pߪ~EjcUa3o Ox*x L)&oFr$sbCH#`e~']җ.O|fsE/O8bkec_җOgn>~<0*@ȯ]h3;Җ`5p&A~TȺxP.Ayil&G0S%NIipUuI%B(F i S(߭DV^+0?ᣆ_#ц>TO \p"6 ixg֍^AΏ<uIpKaa6-"~dհu+ȍcDX[K3+ LRm48@:r.>{GO]܌q49uX=n> O*}2?φ7i; JjD=<31%1h9Gx@PAӲ}#hzIuT&4Q2!2AjU~j ^ Ç8~6ߣO}?0Ʀ6̚>ܨ- Ts,(`gReih_&Ly%-$?*_⚟zגr.ՌWq > xtyRP_NLʄdut(&mn<3 :U1Lni׃N+^oy[V[C[=;@Yr='"Ѕsxߑ 0GlqC8(v>i%W{00)Ⱘʶه~'ʂ9k1փDiR9찿ʭڴڰ001%yם!4;4<1l;P O(~ufٗW '4-%` lRﻼКLԏ7< OL8/CG@ iӛjO&ʭ~ZȘ!}3: +tBj{g Q4RF^Wp wdǫ@?Q6-ٖzЃV/xEIXz>U|A": .SL8`fb2yӂzUE~1< L`q?hl^ ݄C(Gw]9'٦}< h"2=!(50$YG}$p⎘2 T'>+>'})JOM(@}Ӳburz3xɪD4 ptj9HG-JGu[}7hjWZ3oS?‰!Ж\$ `hUV(SEX1V}>V>V!LBRRC鴾U*IcstJ!UAw'0'ЏYqH@Z3mhrSvƉP - M s48 -G#Ғ45vcl,l}2(h& OP#|B Jc:%}gz$J+37l bOķ HM=$cLIIGxh}/A &ֆ&Ӄ G暀a悀1M(K!PtxJAK440Sl wθf) 3>R pL$mVK) P!8iP'=q&ee`R7A& ^0|e6qZ 6ix=eOXRޮfŰxкP]+M!<pU8&|,sW׍!B1Qm5.B< bҩOJB1&?"iپ&|?xhK@R*M07!4y\5@h׎~Y L1]le>!ЮɳDZո1fϽh.'\3,$,ب8}nZӬ4 /nHl:DШ4 `d[296 0T2&vx gZiXuYֵM0]%zh<@eHv1aTNK{`@ex< D[V׭P!T ]Q˽ ɥQ} U9K);L:C˙D"=;Y<<&' “ IӆBІL~fW` 5Mgmx&њ3>%6/潢v6L1'̷+հճjJq3!dzs\mʰ-ʳ< |0%Ѩar^[Eᳱj 8-K بAmghP4i@*?`YQG+!Hy! $0f>?p#K{x +@2όV S& "mPޢ@ $84t4Ս1s:ٵ!X\Pm {6-g>̟ՑF8ixcWLhxN `FWn4ܑ@F Zi >dcf`j2 i#Z&%&D;AkќmPY҈ghdBK9[ce" { 7 Ҕy߭H+3U NJk O[!ʣLJiql˯b@hBieN/u('?̀7j+l$2 ?D1whTg~e{ KMMH_}էR @Փhk+< 4򅴡u?x?|O[\?[%Ӗqbh_vB{yھiCiC ' o]|IIit<`ggljeo8k Ed< dƵV2Je5}Fm=uJH~Ȥ yiZQ6n9Th5#1KlefsЇ=a 6l|ovD}ŷg<5,H_ϴE ҆Zp^'\~` 2txEk!8G>W8ٴ"ڱ<@B'gĒ=gtQ솣j X #/yAb^\#|@ - .Hke/d HL;R&+4r^!ag* ryjIWĻ{h="c|@s.60Z% fl> VjIpE*Ǭqؤ v'&U((`&XGA<%4VDp|sBq 1TV`Ί^+:^FGO:TvuE(XoG46嵡4?[_)_(DNl$L' t80b}zB@ abȆ „pNJTDfA0,M>;k<17b:Yu, ك'0)Vxe<!@!W, ) B66p+x[ "@bxwt< $U|v/Cӳ)nu""dV=$bGiSsI^}ǯ8caeIM/>$w5x0ܑ&M d%4(AX*3kO11feҮ{J`@ H:aukSVf戣tLBv M:Mϕ& xRxB?16 j * ? h4LZ.JU^Asz‡yqPM0se#Ӵ;MngvW58,3 /]U׈FDV 5;7vC6@N=D Rhrc6 \ °9Z"^Mw AjuFiW,Cb`+S {&WOVo`~$<@JxCL U xtm$f '\F>n(-lܟ7%<ړ̣ow`=D3?aU[6`&XhoB|<x66#ઇO}w*.Lf/o}t<@c1k\=o?T2hڌ} HNT{Ș -]gF{Y^7eCHac\ڥcoB)̲> ı8 `.>ƒ4ƝXS2D>Iy7 +I6|&ۦ –f|\6R"llUd0Qh\; Հ8U kIЎ~l<姝d:#Xa3@gX و48+#9q9T~!,65(O"?\g^0$yn/V CcV6 "L&]V(?b<7gƁ'3YD9 "S;ߔZuxh4(zK\{+QUrye -@ m2^W>哿K$:2S4d^1}̷NI_$̢JO˧>ڝ}t Mh;'0i> gÛhl'=gQicQ>ZImcpÈa1)ZC̤]Hjz{~Խ :&'`-Eh2 `6cѦ$Q{M3t0d+|Ӯ峽ޒm+ޟf߷uoD p`ePō; mx/<] P%GP/'NMK?h#!V!
